Description
*Echoes of the Abyss* is set in the depths of an oceanic trench. Players control a mini-submarine and navigate using sonar. With visibility extremely limited, players must actively tap the screen to emit sonar pulses; only the returning echoes reveal the terrain ahead. This echolocation mechanic forces players to constantly send out signals in the darkness, balancing the need to avoid underwater mountain ranges against the risk of attracting giant creatures with their echoes. The game features 2,800 levels, spanning depths from 100 meters below the surface down to the extreme abyss of the Mariana Trench. The shallow zone (Levels 1–700) has sparse marine life and simple terrain; the mid-depth zone (Levels 701–1400) introduces hydrothermal vents that intermittently spew scorching gas, lifting the submarine; the deep zone (Levels 1401–2100) contains complex brine pools—dense areas that cause the submarine to sink, requiring increased engine power to traverse; and the abyssal zone (Levels 2101–2800) is not only dark but also home to predators camouflaged as rocks—indistinguishable from the terrain when motionless—forcing players to rely on subtle sonar echo variations to identify them.
The skill system includes Wide-Area Sonar to expand the detection range; Silent Navigation, which allows players to see faintly illuminated terrain without emitting sonar for a short period—useful for passing through predator-dense areas; and Emergency Ascent, a survival skill that rapidly lifts the submarine to avoid spikes on the seabed. Skill upgrades require collecting deep-sea manganese nodules; these are often located on dangerous branching paths, adding a high-risk, high-reward element to exploration.
